Kelsey Baker is an artist who uses reflective and transparent materials to capture light and color in oil paintings. These paintings walk the line between representation and abstraction, appearing as translations of translations of an unattainable original form. Realistically representing unrecognizable content in a traditional, seamless style imbues the finished paintings with a sense of mystery; the sensuous handling of paint makes them feel tangible to the viewer but their identity is veiled. The images are strategically deceptive, perplexing, even confounding, but they are ultimately pleasurable to behold. The paintings’ shifting identities explore the complexities of the pleasure of illusion, and how one can be fooled about the true nature of an image.
